Soul2Soul (S2S) Solutions, Ltd., is committed to focusing on what really matters most by supporting those who care for others. Founded on the premise that there is no greater honor than to care for another person, S2S delivers faith-based programs designed to holistically care for the caregiver, providing them with the resilience to transform their caregiving journey. S2S believes that by supporting family caregivers, in this way, those being cared for will also benefit greatly.
How so? Studies prove it and our work demonstrates that when caregivers have less stress, a greater sense of purpose and the courage to advocate for their loved one, the person being cared for will receive better care and have a higher quality life.
Deb Kelsey-Davis founded S2S (Soul2Soul) Solutions in 2015 to address three critical needs:
1. The lack of products and services equally supporting the practical, emotional and spiritual needs of family caregivers;
2. The absence of formal Catholic faith-based programs for family caregivers; and,
3. The reported daily struggles of family caregivers seeking to get better care for their loved ones and finding community resources to support them.
Never before in history have we seen the number of people, worldwide, struggling to juggle the demands of every day life with those of career, family and caring for an aging parent, grandparent, sibling, spouse or special needs child. And, it’s only going to get worse!
In the United States alone, the number of informal family caregivers who are caring for an aging loved one or a person with disabilities is estimated by the Institute of Medicine (2016) to be somewhere between 29 and 52 million. The fact of the matter is that number could be significantly higher, as family caregivers are often reluctant to self-identify; many have no idea that what they are doing is being a “caregiver”. They are simply fulfilling the role of dutiful daughter, loving spouse, helpful son, good brother/sister or a caring grandchild.
What’s Different About S2S?
Pioneers in the field have developed guidebooks, built “how-to” programs and culled online resources for family caregivers. Many of these forerunners came to do this work because of a personal experience of caring for a family member. However, S2S believes there is a very important aspect that is missing from these efforts –the element of faith.
Think about it. Where is faith in all of this? It’s rather astounding that this essential ingredient is missing, especially when caregivers say that faith is one of the most important coping mechanisms they have! According to the Family Caregiver Alliance – National Center on Caregiving 2016 Fact Sheet, an overwhelming 70% of caregivers say their spiritual and religious faith has a significant level of importance in their lives. Moreover, 75% of caregivers say they pray regularly, as a means of coping.
Yet, looking out at the sea of content on the internet, the programs being propagated in communities, and the books being written with an abundance of wonderful tools, worksheets and advice, the question remains, “Where is faith found in all of this?” S2S answers this through its programs which embrace the practical, emotional and spiritual aspects of caregiving.
Family caregivers are a silent and often invisible group, who are largely overlooked and whose needs go unmet. Truly, they are a population at risk.
A question frequently asked is, “Who is caring for the caregiver?” That question is garnering attention at all levels of the White House, as well as in the houses of families across the country. The overriding consensus says that they are not well supported, nor is their means of coping being addressed.
